As I mentioned earlier, the ABA has named the Common Nighthawk as the 2013 Bird of the Year. Richard Crossley kindly provided this plate so I can wax poetic about these birds once again. I love their coloring and they are truly unique when viewed from below in flight. The first time I saw this bird was at an evening flag football game and they were feeding around the field lights. At first I thought they were giant bats because of their flight patter, then I noted the distinctive white spots on their wings. Nothing else quite like them in our area.
This plate is from The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds. If you don’t already own a copy, I highly suggest you check it out. And if you already own a copy — I highly suggest you buy another.
