How to survive a zombie apocalypse – using math!

Princeton University Press author and Professor of Mathematics Colin Adams is coming to The Harvard Coop Bookstore on September 24th, where he’ll be reading from, and signing copies of his latest book, Zombies and Calculus.

Colin Adams, an academic and a humor columnist (a rare combination!) presents a fictional account of how math can save your life in a zombie invasion. Zombies and Calculus is a math novel that tells the story of a zombie invasion on a college campus and a calculus professor who must race to save his friends, students, and family. As the zombie virus spreads and civilization crumbles, the professor uses calculus to help his small band of survivors defeat the hordes of the undead.

Along the way, readers learn how to avoid being eaten by taking advantage of the fact that zombies always point their tangent vector toward their target, and how to use exponential growth to determine the rate at which the virus is spreading. Williams also covers topics such as logistic growth, gravitational acceleration, predator-prey models, pursuit problems, the physics of combat, and more. With the aid of his story, you too can survive the zombie onslaught and learn more about calculus in a fun, new way.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to hob-nob with Mr. Adams, and more importantly, to learn how to defeat the undead with derivatives. Who knows – one day, you might actually need to! Until then, be sure to ‘like’ the Zombies and Calculus Facebook page and share it with your friends. We look forward to seeing you there!

Bill T. Jones at the 2014 Baltimore Book Festival @ Literary Salon, The Visitor Center at the Inner Harbor | Baltimore | Maryland | United States

Bill T. Jones Bill T. Jones, renowned director and choreographer and author of the forthcoming book Story/Time (Princeton) can add another title to his list: this fall, he will be one of the presenting authors at the 2014 Baltimore Book Festival in Baltimore, Maryland.

The winner of a MacArthur “Genius” grant and of two Tony awards for Best Choreography (oh, and let’s not forget the Kennedy Center honors), Bill T. Jones is a living legend. He’ll be putting his talents on display at the Baltimore Book Festival from September 26-28, where he’ll not only perform pieces of Story/Time, the dance production that inspired the book, but participate in discussions about, and sign copies of Story/Time.

From the Baltimore Book Festival: “In Story/Time, Jones fuses the age-old art of storytelling with a vibrant landscape of contemporary movement and music. Similar to a busy streetscape or a crowded room, the experience challenges audience members to find meaning and connection in the sweep of randomized, disparate elements. Jones’ short stories are drawn from his own life and tales handed down through the generations of his family. In layering a traditional form against the avant-garde compositional concerns of the mid- century modernists, the tension between high and low art is called in to question.”

Bill T. Jones, author of Story/Time: The Life of an Idea, will be at New York Live Arts on Sunday, November 9th at 5 pm to discuss his latest work of art: his book. Don’t miss it!

Here are just some of the great reviews the book is seeing so far:

Bill T. Jones“One of America’s iconic dancers and choreographers gives us an insight into his inspirations and processes, in a series of vivid vignettes of being, thinking, and doing, which is to say, of living. A fascinating text.”—Salman Rushdie

“Bill T. Jones has always been on the forefront of powerful hybrid art forms, whether it’s politics and dance or Broadway and edgy. In Story/Time, he spins John Cage. A master of timing, Jones applies Cage’s rigor to his own work, adding his own style and warmth. Story/Time’s choreographed language is a beautiful new realm.”—Laurie Anderson

“A miraculous time spent in the company of Bill T. Jones, as he questions, conjectures, and responds to the words, thoughts, and works of John Cage. It is a gift to the world of ideas, and to us all.”—Damian Woetzel, director of the Aspen Institute Arts Program
