The Fungus Among Us

Armillaria ostoyae, Denmark

Reading through The Kingdom of Fungi by Jens H. Petersen and run across this fascinating tidbit: “The Humongous Fungus” is a giant Armillaria ostoyae in the Blue Mountains of Oregon that covers an area close to ten square kilometers (an area roughly equivalent to three Central Parks smooshed together). Scientists estimate the mycelium is between 2000 and 8000 years old, making it one of the top ten largest and oldest organisms in the world.

So, picture this specimen, but covering acres and acres of forest.
