This is one of the “mystery plates” in The Crossley ID Guide: Raptors by Richard Crossley, Jerry Liguori, and Brian L. Sullivan. These plates are sprinkled throughout the book, giving readers an opportunity to test their ID skills.

Southeastern raptors. Various species are native to or winter in the Southeast, and they vary greatly in size, shape, plumage, habitat, and behavior. Knowing the plumages and other ID features of each will help identify the raptors of this region. They also hunt in different ways from each other, and these hunting behaviors also help to identify them.
