Derek and Sissela Bok were interviewed last night by Jeffrey Brown on NewsHour last night on how they both came to study happiness and what it is like to be a “couple both writing books on happiness.” Derek’s response?
I think that just elevates the happiness even more. I think — I would recommend it to any couple. Write different books, noncompetitive books about the same subject, and you have guaranteed interesting dinner table conversations for months on end.
As you can see in the interview above, while Derek and Sissela’s books are ostensibly on the same subject, they are written with completely different approaches. Derek discusses how the government could positively impact happiness by addressing health issues like sleep disorders, while Sissela takes “the long view” according to Jeffrey Brown. She describes her approach as looking “at everything that’s been done for millennia, really, in religion, in literature, in philosophy, and to bring that together with all the new research.”
